The front pasture at Nelson Cattle Company is just a slice of heaven. It is absolutely the easiest place in Western Iowa to shop for show calves. You can sit in a rocking chair on the bunkhouse porch and see every calf. If you don’t want to look at calves, we’ll serve you a cold beverage and talk about the cattle business! If you want to stay for dinner, we’ll fire up the grill and throw on the burgers!
Club Calf Paradise came about almost by accident. Nelson’s have the room in the front pasture and a great, easy to find location in the heart of the Western Iowa Club Calf Tour. If you make the Western Iowa swing, you need to stop in. This year, since we have the room and decided only to put the best calves on the sale, we invited some neighboring friends and breeders to participate in our sale.
Chuck Sandvold Show Cattle is a long time club calf operation. Chuck’s kids are no strangers to the steer show ring. Brett is one of the few junior showman to show the Iowa State Fair Grand Champion Steer. If you have ever seen the steer show at the state fair, you know what kind of accomplishment that is. Well, Chuck’s kids are grown, but the steer show business is just stuck in Chuck’s blood. He likes to grow the next state fair winner. Chuck sells some of the better calves in Western Iowa every year. Now Chuck is part of Club Calf Paradise and his calves will sell on this sale. We are pleased to have them at our facility.
Rex McDermott Show Cattle is a great family operation located at Atlantic, Iowa. Rex has owned some great club calf bulls and has some of the best cows in the business. Rex’ son Dexter is becoming one of the premier young showman on the Iowa Junior show circuit. They raise good cattle and they show good cattle. Rex and Dex haven’t had the time to get their calves ready for the Labor Day tour in the past so we made a deal to get the top end of Rex’s calf crop for the Club Calf Paradise Sale. Rex is one of those guys that has three balls in the air at all times so we are glad we could help him out.
Alan Bruhn and his sons, Calvin and Jared, run one of the bigger farming operations in the area and they run a real cow/calf operation along with it. They have a long history in the Angus business and in recent years have been using some of the best Maine and Club Calf genetics on some great registered and commercial angus cows.
If you need a ChiAngus show heifer, look no further than Lot 594. This is an About Time heifer that will stop you in your tracks. You are going to need to widen your barn doors if you own this heifer. If you can find a show heifer with a wider top and ass - we want to see her. This is a late addition to the sale and we regret that she wasn’t here for picture day. She is massively thick, pretty fronted and great haired. Hang on to your hats!
The real feature of the Bruhn offering is a set of half blood replacement heifers out of commercial angus cows that are really super - the momma cow kind. There are MaineTainer daughters of HAA Stockman, Hall’s Wells Fargo and Contender and two blaze face Foundation Simmental heifers sired by Maximus. These are the real cow making kind of heifers and they are sired by bulls that are syndicated or otherwise unavailable. Absolutely dynamite genetics! These heifers are based at $1000. If you need real world club calf replacement females, you just can’t miss these heifers. Somebody should sweep this pen clean and we will be surprised if someone doesn’t.
Most of these heifer calves (including the About Time heifer) are out of first calf commercial heifers from the SR Ranch in Montana. These heifers were full of milk and all had beautifully constructed udders. Being born in Montana these heifers know how to grow hair and their daughters will be the same.
Even though there has been a Labor Day Sale in the Nelson Front Pasture for many years, this is a new day. We welcome you to Club Calf Paradise! |
